Dune landscape as natural border

Towards the dunes of Kijkduin, west of The Hague, lies a secluded self-build site Schapenatjesduin. The last homes are still being built, as are the timber frame affordable housing blocks on the edge of the development.

Taking inspiration from its location, close to the beach, this self-build site has captured coastal characteristics in the design code and variety of plots. Detached homes border a large pond which has tall reeds in the summer. Blocks of three or four terraced houses have been built on the edges of the site and some of the owners teamed up to design and develp their houses with one architect and builder.

Building work

As the plots have limited private gardens and are very close together, it was good to see how people successfully manage their building work and store their building materials so that they don’t inconvenience their neighbours. A site manager helps with this too.
